How PIOs Can Tackle AI-Generated Misinformation

The media landscape is changing at a mindblowing rate, and for comms professionals, that change is both exciting and challenging. Artificial intelligence (AI) tools now generate news content in seconds, but sometimes these AI-created stories get it wrong. Without a human journalist to contact, fixing inaccuracies can feel like trying to catch smoke.

Why AI-Generated Misinformation is a Problem

AI-generated news is often created without human oversight, pulling from data sources like public records, press releases, or even social media. While this process can speed up reporting, it can also lead to errors. Whether it’s misinterpreting a statistic, mislabeling an incident, or misrepresenting a statement, these inaccuracies can spread fast, especially when amplified by social media or content farms.

And here’s the kicker: there’s no journalist to call or editor to email. You’re up against an algorithm, not a person.

So how can you mitigate against this unknown force? Well, you probably never fully can, but you can do certain things to at least ensure your narrative is consistent and trustworthy, which puts doubt in the mind of the reader of AI-generated content.
