General Description: The Community Safety Outreach Coordinator is responsible for building relationships and enhancing the safety and security of the NOVA community. The Community Safety Outreach Coordinator will serve as a liaison with local law enforcement agencies, share important safety and security information with the NOVA community and enhance the NOVA Police Department’s reputation as a resource for faculty, staff and students. The Community Safety Outreach Coordinator is responsible for developing engaging social media content across a myriad of NOVA platforms with the aim to build brand awareness, connection, and a sense of community. Must work across the College to advance storytelling and brand awareness efforts to include but not limited to students, faculty, staff and College leadership.


This is a civilian position within the NOVA Police Department.

Duties and Tasks: Specific outreach duties include:

  • Develop and execute outreach programs that align with the goals of the College and the NOVA Police Department while promoting the image of both and working with other internal and external entities to provide accurate, timely and appropriate information
  • Create and present safety and security-related training for NOVA campuses, facilities and surrounding communities
  • Design content including images, graphics and videos for social media use
  • Maintain the NOVA Police website in partnership with College Web Services
  • Develop and continually grow the department’s social media presence with engaging and informative content
  • Sponsor outreach activities on campus
  • Prepare and distribute NOVA’s monthly Public Safety Newsletter
  • Distribute safety and security information and resources
  • Collaborate with local law enforcement agencies on outreach events
  • Maintain activities database of presentations and training events.


Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

KSA's/Required Qualifications

Required KSAs:

  • Proven ability to manage a brand or organization’s social presence across platforms and successfully engage followers
  • Knowledge of and ability to keep up with latest trends, business models, social media policies and evolving web/SEO technologies
  • High degree of professionalism and ability to work successfully within a cross-functional team and members of NOVA’s wider community
  • Excellent written and oral English communication skills, editing, web, social media and marketing knowledge
  • Strong public speaking skills
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft (PC) office applications, Photoshop
  • Knowledge of AP Stylebook guidelines and web products such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, TikTok and Sprout Social along with how best to use them as marketing tools to promote the department
  • Ability to become certified in community outreach areas of expertise (such as crime prevention)
  • Ability to follow instructions and meet deadlines
  • Qualified to operate a state vehicle

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BA/BS in communications, social media, journalism, marketing or related field or equivalent to experience/training or combination of both education and experience/training
  • Significant experience in public speaking
  • Some experience in promoting educational programs and services
  • Website functionality
  • Successfully pass a thorough background investigation

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a college/university environment
  • Some experience working in Google Analytics and social media analytics
  • Experience in publication development
  • Ability to speak another language
