How to Choose Which Platforms Are the Best for Your Agency


Give us an overview of your role and what it entails on a daily basis

My role includes social media posting, management, content creation, scheduling, everything that goes into social media for the City of San Diego platforms on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn and Nextdoor. I also handle media relations for a few of our departments, as a part of my regular duties (press releases, pitching stories, interview coordination, web updates, creating marketing materials) as one of approximately 15 PIOs in the City of San Diego Communications Department.


What do you love about about your job?

The direct impact I get to make in my community and for the City of San Diego as a whole. After being in this position for over 6 years, it is exciting to know a little bit about nearly everything that is going on in our City, and being able to find new creative ways to share that news with our community. Every day our team works to create new exciting content that not only informs our followers, but engages them to share with their community to expand our audience be able to reach even more residents.

What’s the hardest thing about your job?

Balancing priorities. A blessing and a curse of being a PIO in a centralized communications department for a large city, and especially as the social media manager, is that you know a little bit about nearly everything that is going on. So this helps in breaking down silos and building collaborative teams citywide, but can also be challenging when ranking priorities, organizing a social media calendar, organizing press conferences, etc.


One piece of advice for those wanting to start a career as a Public Information Officer or comms professional

You do not have to have a communications degree or marketing background, just an interest in/ passion for local government. It may seem boring compared to national politics, but local government issues have the biggest and most noticeable impact on people's daily lives.


What's your top tip or piece of advice regarding social media engagement in public safety?

Don't put text on your images! Use square or vertical images! Caption your videos! Don't be afraid of the comments, all comments boost your engagement.
